Avanti appoints mining veteran Jonah as chair, acquires gold prospect in Botswana https://thebossgh.com/avanti-appoints-mining-veteran-jonah-as-chair-acquires-gold-prospect-in-botswana/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=avanti-appoints-mining-veteran-jonah-as-chair-acquires-gold-prospect-in-botswana Sat, 11 May 2024 17:54:54 +0000 https://absedugh.org/website_9709c045/?p=8759 Canada-listed Avanti Gold has appointed Sir Samuel Jonah as director and chairperson of the company, at a time when the company is exploring a stretch of newly acquired prospective terrain in Botswana.

Jonah has made valuable contributions to the mining sector in Africa, including as former president of gold miner AngloGold Ashanti and has served on the boards of companies such as Moto Gold Mines, Vodafone Group, Standard Bank Group, Roscan Gold and Bank of America Corporation’s Global Advisory Council.

He is currently also chairperson of telecoms infrastructure company Helios Towers.

In particular, Jonah helped transform the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation into a mining multinational since he joined the corporation in 1979. The company managed to increase gold production from 240,000 oz/y to more than 1.6 million ounces a year in ten years, before merging with AngloGold.

Jonah contributed to the listing of Ashanti Goldfields on the NYSE, which was the first operating African company to list on the exchange.

He also helped to build Uramin from a start-up Aim-listed junior mining company to a major uranium producer that was sold for $ 2.4 billion – in less than 24 months.

Notably, Jonah was the first Ghanaian to be knighted in the twenty-first century when he was presented with an honorary knighthood in recognition of his achievements as an African businessman and international public figure.

He was elected as a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2018, owing to his distinguished leadership and technical contributions to engineering in the African mineral industry.

Meanwhile, Avanti has entered into a share exchange agreement with a privately held company called MTM, which is based in Seychelles, through which Avanti aims to acquire all the outstanding share capital of the company.

MTM holds the rights to prospecting gold licences in the District of Molopo, in the highly prospective Kraaipan Granite-Greenstone Belt that extends from southern Botswana into South Africa’s North West province. The licence rights cover an area of about 90 ha in the overall 400-km-long belt.

Avanti will issue 29 million common shares to the shareholders of MTM, and the transaction will not constitute a fundamental change for Avanti or result in a change of control of Avanti.

Avanti is also working to develop the tier-one gold asset, Misisi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, located in the South Kovu province. The project currently has a contained inferred mineral resource of three million ounces of gold.

Ibrahim Mahama, the Ghanaian artist giving a London landmark a Ghanaian makeover https://thebossgh.com/ibrahim-mahama-the-ghanaian-artist-giving-a-london-landmark-a-ghanaian-makeover/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ibrahim-mahama-the-ghanaian-artist-giving-a-london-landmark-a-ghanaian-makeover Sat, 11 May 2024 17:42:13 +0000 https://absedugh.org/website_9709c045/?p=8744 Known for his work on recycled materials, Mahama is transforming a British Landmark, the Barbican Centre

Located in London, the capital of Great Britain, Mahama has covered the building with 2,000 m² of magenta fabric made of jute bags.

The 37-year-old in an interview with the BBC News revealed that he turned to local experts in northern Ghana near his studio in Tamale, to weave and sew this project on a colossal scale.

During three months, a team of 1,000 people hand-stitched 2,000 square metres of striped cotton, decorating it with 130 traditional smocks known as batakari.

Purple Hibiscus and Mahama’s other large-scale public art installations reference the power of collective labour and the memories that textiles contain.

Jute sacks – used to transport cocoa, rice and charcoal – were draped over the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. It was Mahama’s way of exploring the history of trade in commodities and globalisation.

His latest project at the Barbican showcases a typically Ghanaian item he has been collecting since 2012.

Its objective is to denounce the flaws of globalization by sewing together these bags that have been used worldwide to transport cocoa, rice, or coal.

The Ghanaian is not his first attempt with this creation entitled “Purple Hibiscus”.

Brilliant Ghanaian student in the United States receives research award to conduct research in Louisiana https://thebossgh.com/brilliant-ghanaian-student-in-the-united-states-receives-research-award-to-conduct-research-in-louisiana/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brilliant-ghanaian-student-in-the-united-states-receives-research-award-to-conduct-research-in-louisiana Wed, 17 Apr 2024 10:34:05 +0000 https://absedugh.org/website_9709c045/?p=8723 Redeemer Buatsi is a Ghanaian student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who has recently been awarded a 25,000 Ghana cedis (2000$) award to conduct research in the State of Louisiana.

The award is part of strategic steps being undertaken by the University of Louisiana to promote research aimed at strengthening the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals in Louisiana. More importantly, the grant aims to encourage graduate students to conduct SDG-related research that feeds into the larger SDG framework.

Redeemer will be studying how the media in the state of Louisiana presents issues affecting women and children, specifically issues about sexual violence against women. The primary aim of the research is to investigate the role of media framing of sexual violence against women and how that can affect social inclusion policies in the State.

By exploring this important SDG from a Louisiana and Southern States perspective, the research will provide insights into how the Louisiana media landscape is addressing issues of Gender equality (Goal 5), Good Health (Goal 3) and well-being and Peace, Justice, and Strong institutions (Goal 16).

About Redeemer Buatsi

Redeemer Buatsi is a young researcher currently studying a Master of Science program in communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He completed his undergraduate degree at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, now UniMAC-IJ, under the Lebanese scholarship program.

He also received his master’s degree in development communication from the same University, with funding from the Lebanese scholarship program. During his master’s program, Redeemer received another scholarship to participate in an exchange program under the Erasmus+ scholarship program at NLA University College in Norway.

Redeemer won third place for best graduate research at the 51st RAMP conference at Howard University in Washington DC.

The SDG Goals

The United Nations and other supra-national organizations have been working for years to prioritize Sustainable Development. The United Nations describes Sustainable Development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and the planet. For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial to harmonize three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. These elements are interconnected and are all crucial for the well-being of individuals and societies.

To this end, there must be promotion of sustainable, inclusive, and equitable economic growth creating greater opportunities for all, reducing inequalities, raising basic standards of living, fostering equitable social development and inclusion, and promoting integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.

The UN’s focus on Sustainable Development can be directly applied through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing communities, nations, regions and businesses with a roadmap to working towards a more sustainable society.
